The Special Victims Unit investigates child abuse and neglect
cases, elderly abuse and neglect cases, runaway and missing
juveniles, missing and endangered adults, and all sex crimes,
including sexual homicides. The SVU is comprised of a sergeant,
three detectives and a civilian victim advocate.
The SVU is nationally certified as a Child Abduction Response
Team (CART). Detectives are members of the South Florida CART
which investigates abducted children Martin County south to
Monroe County.
SVU detectives are also members of Internet Crimes Against
Children (ICAC), which investigates all crimes against children
via the Internet. The unit's mission is to protect those who
cannot protect themselves.
