The Boynton Beach Police Department’s Internal Affairs Unit plays a vital role in maintaining the integrity, professionalism, and legitimacy of our agency. Our commitment to transparency and accountability is essential to earning—and keeping—the trust of the community we serve.

Internal Affairs oversees the acceptance, review, and investigation of all allegations of misconduct or concerns regarding police performance. Through objective, thorough, and fair investigations, we ensure that every complaint is handled responsibly and that every member of our department is held to the highest standards of conduct.

Our Role

Internal Affairs serves as the central unit responsible for:

  • Receiving, documenting, and tracking all complaints involving employee conduct or service concerns
  • Ensuring every complaint—external or internal—is investigated thoroughly and impartially
  • Investigating allegations of serious or complex misconduct
  • Providing oversight and support to supervisors

Every investigation is conducted in accordance with Florida Statutes, accreditation standards, and department policy—ensuring fairness to all parties involved.

How Complaints Are Received

We are committed to making the complaint process accessible, respectful, and transparent. Complaints may be submitted:

  • In person
  • By phone
  • Through our website
  • By mail or email
  • Anonymously

Internal Affairs investigates when allegations involve:

  • Criminal conduct
  • Serious policy violations
  • Excessive force
  • Gross misconduct
  • Incidents involving serious injury or death
  • Potential litigation
  • Matters requiring extensive or specialized investigation

These investigations are conducted separate from any criminal inquiry.

Supervisory Investigations occur when allegations involve:

  • Discourtesy
  • Minor policy violations
  • Vehicle crashes
  • Pursuit violations
  • Neglect of duty
  • Insubordination
  • Minor rule infractions

All investigations—whether administrative or supervisory—are conducted fairly, thoroughly, and in compliance with the Law Enforcement Officer’s Bill of Rights.

During an investigation, Internal Affairs ensures:

  • The rights of all involved parties are protected
  • Interviews are recorded and evidence is preserved
  • The subject officer is given written notification of the allegation prior to being interviewed
  • Complainants and witnesses are treated with respect and dignity
  • Investigations follow proper legal and procedural requirements
  • Findings are based solely on the facts

All complaints receive an official disposition, which may include:

  • Sustained
  • Not Sustained
  • Exonerated
  • Unfounded
  • Policy Failure

Complainants receive written notification once the investigation is complete.

Internal Affairs maintains detailed, secure investigative files using the IAPro and Blue Team systems.

In accordance with Florida law:

  • All internal investigations are confidential until closed
  • Completed records are public, subject to statutory exemptions
  • Members are notified when public records requests involve their files
  • Records are retained per the Florida General Records Schedule

This ensures the department operates with transparency while respecting the legal protections afforded to both officers and community members.

Administrative leave or reassignment may be used during an investigation. This is not a form of discipline, nor does it imply guilt. It is an administrative step that protects the employee, the public, and the integrity of the investigative process.

Our Promise to the Community

Internal Affairs exists to reinforce one of our department’s most important values: integrity.

We are committed to:

  • Treating every complaint seriously
  • Conducting every investigation objectively
  • Holding ourselves to the highest professional standards
  • Ensuring accountability that strengthens community trust

We encourage all members of the community to reach out with concerns, questions, or feedback. Your voice helps us ensure we are providing the quality of service that the Boynton Beach community deserves.
