Boynton Beach Police are investigating a traffic crash that critically injured a 24-year-old Boynton Beach resident on New Year’s Day.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of a 2001 Kawasaki dirt bike was traveling east in the 400 block of west Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd at around 5:54 p.m. The driver of a 2005 BMW X3 was traveling west on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd and made a left turn onto Northwest 3rd Street in front of the dirt bike.
The dirt bike driver, identified as Benjamin Burnton, was ejected from the motorcycle. He was taken to a local trauma center with critical injuries. The driver of the other vehicle, identified as Wilfred Taylor, 81, of Boynton Beach was not injured.
Investigators said the unregistered dirt bike was not equipped with any lights or turn signals, and believe Taylor was unable to see it approaching in the dark.
Boynton Beach Police remind the public that dirt bikes, ATVs and 4-wheelers are off-road vehicles, and it is illegal to drive them on the roadway.
