UPDATE May 12, 2021, 4:30 p.m.
The investigation into last night’s police-involved shooting continues. Officers responded to reports of a violent domestic disturbance that involved two women and a man in an apartment in the Via Lugano community just after 10 p.m.
Upon arrival, officers encountered the man, who was armed with a knife and a hammer. The encounter and subsequent fatal police-involved shooting is being investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which is the standard practice the police department implemented several years ago to increase transparency and confidence in the outcome.
“Last night’s incident serves a stark reminder of the dangers police officers face responding to calls of domestic violence,” Police Chief Michael G. Gregory said. “We are grateful that neither the women nor our officers were gravely injured during this extremely volatile situation.”
The names of the female victims, as well as the names of the two officers, who are also victims, are exempt from public record pursuant to Florida Constitution, Article 1, 16(b), Marsy’s Law. The name of the deceased man is Christian Castro, 1/10/94 of Clifton, New Jersey.
The Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office and the Boynton Beach Police Department’s Office of Internal Affairs will conduct independent investigations into the shooting. The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave with pay, which is standard protocol.
